This is a beginner’s dressmaking class so no experience of dressmaking is required, but you do need to know how to use a sewing machine.
We will expect you to have taken the Beginners sewing course or be at an equivalent standard.
During the course, you will learn how to use and understand commercial patterns - we will start with a skirt, covering darts, waistbands, zips and hems. We also make a top covering bust darts, facings and setting in sleeves. We use 2 commercial patterns. You will be emailed the pattern numbers once you have booked.
WEEK 1&2: Learn how to take your measurements, how to read and cut out a pattern and alter the length if necessary, how to pin the pattern accurately on the fabric. You will then learn how to insert a zip and construct the skirt, finishing the seams with zig zag stitches. Learn how to attach a waistband, how to hem and how to sew button and button holes.
WEEK 3&4: Make a top, learning how to sew bust darts, sew a facing, and how to attached a sleeve. After measuring the pattern, you will cut out and make your garment in a fabric of your own choice.
